PawtucketWedged between Pawtucket and Seekonk is a slice of heaven…a golfers’ retreat…minus the sights and sounds of the city. Pawtucket CC is not just any ordinary golf club. It is one of the five remaining original ten historic and elite golf clubs in Rhode Island, that continue to be an integral part of the RIGA.
Steeped in history and tradition, this legendary golf club was established in 1902 as Pawtucket Golf Club, by five prominent businessmen from Pawtucket, who wanted a nearby venue to play a quick round of golf after work. It was designed by renowned architect Willie Park Jr., a native of Scotland, who won the British Open back in 1887 and 1889.
Tucked away off Armistice Blvd., you may unknowingly pass by it, as it has no grand entrance. The frontal view of the clubhouse may not impress you, but your senses come alive when you drive around the backside of the clubhouse where you’ll encounter cascading waters of the Ten Mile River which flows alongside the first two holes. Distracted by the sights and sounds of the river, like me, you may miss the Olympic sized pool hidden from view behind the clubhouse. It’s not until you climb the stone steps to the clubhouse that you’ll realize its grandeur and elegance. In its heyday it must have been the “Belle of the Ball”…hosting many prestigious parties, weddings and political functions. Breathtaking is the immensity of the structure with plenty of outdoor dining options…oversized covered porch, huge canopied patio area overlooking the 18th green. The multi-story clubhouse boasts traditional, victorian decor with a grill and formal dining rooms, small rooms for card playing and several ballrooms with window walls that invite the outside in with amazing golf course views. Billiards anyone? Yeah, they even have a billiards room as well as men and ladies’ locker rooms.
Pawtucket CC is the ultimate players club for all levels of golfers. Mike Gelinas, Director of Golf, said “We offer golfers an opportunity to experience a course that you can play in 3.5 hours and a facility that caters to family and business relationships.” The layout is player-friendly, particularly for ladies, for whom there are no forced carries. The first hole is visually intimidating with the river on the left and demands a diagonal shot to the uphill fairway. It’s clear sailing after this! A lateral water hazard appears between holes 12 & 13, but doesn’t come into play unless you hit an errant shot. Walkers will love this course because most holes are straight up, no severe doglegs or elevation changes. Mature oaks line the inviting, rolling fairways which are relatively wide, and most greens are wide open with the exception of the par-3, 7th which features an elevated green fronted by an elongated bunker. I’d say the greens are the most challenging aspect of this course…smooth, slick and undulating with subtle breaks that are difficult to read. The 18th hole offers a climactic finish as the severely rolling terrain offers a splendid ride to an elevated green with the backdrop of the majestic clubhouse. A picture-perfect finish!!
