Amidst the busy manufacturing city of Fall River, MA lies a golfer’s paradise. Secluded in nature with unique architectural style, this private 18-hole gem, located along the banks of the scenic Taunton River, is one of the oldest golf courses in Massachusetts where golf legends like Bobby Jones and Harry Vardon have played. The dramatic drive onto the property awakens your senses as you weave through federally designed wild, over an old wooden railroad-tie bridge leading you to the historic clubhouse complete with pro-shop, multi-level indoor/outdoor dining, two bars, outdoor concession stand and stationary on-course beverage cart.
Like an amusement ride, this fun, yet challenging course will entertain you with its sudden twists and turns, dramatic rises and drops in elevation, and water views on 14 of the 18 holes. The course is not lacking in layout challenges…rolling, sloping fairways, steep uphill fairway shots, elevated tiered greens and blind tee shots. Bedazzled by the architectural beauty and surprise vistas that continually pop-up to test your golf skills, you will never get bored playing this course! You will walk away with several distinctive, memorable holes in mind that will haunt you to replay. To name a few…the signature par-3 3rd hole featuring a downhill tee shot over water to a well guarded elevated green. The 10th and 11th holes meander alongside captivating views of the Taunton River. The par-3 12th with its narrow, severely sloped terrain, demands a precise downhill tee shot to a pint-sized green.
Compared to newer courses that are designed with more tee box options to accommodate all player levels, Fall River CC has implemented the “Tee It Forward” initiative by placing an additional set of tee markers (white) on each hole to provide more manageable distance for junior, senior and female golfers. The PGA advocated this initiative a few years ago to help “Grow the Game” by making it more fun, decrease playing time, recoup older players who have left the game and attract female and junior golfers. The overall yardage from the previous forward tee markers measured a long 5,601 yards (par 70), offering little distance advantage for your higher handicapped players. The new forward tees offer an overall yardage of 4,459 yards, changing par to 66 for men and 68 for women. Ben Kilborn, head Pro, commented, “The new tee markers should be a lot more friendly to an often neglected segment of the golfing population that all clubs should be trying to cater to.” Play from the new markers will be sloped and rated soon and integrated into the scorecard.
This lush, well manicured course offers superb playing conditions and now with the more manageable distance, is an attractive golf venue for women.
